Step 1 : A short introduction to the question “Robert Morris University was the first college in America to offer scholarships for what?“
All those late nights spent playing video games until 3 a.m. are about to pay off… literally. There are a lot of scholarships available for gamers who want to pay for college. The activity is known as eSports and consists of organised video game competitions. Students can earn up to $19,000 per year in gaming scholarships at Robert Morris University, which was the first college in the United States to offer them. According to the school, it also wanted to recognise those who have a competitive spirit but don’t necessarily want to participate in traditional sports like basketball or football.

University of Robert Morris to offer games in computer
AURORA, Ill. (WLS) — Competitive computer gamers can now receive tens of thousands of dollars in free tuition and room and board from Robert Morris University.
“You have physical sports like football and basketball,” said Robert Morris University senior Andrew Dixon of Lockport, “but this is a very mentally taxing game, especially when you’re pitted against five individuals who are all trying to achieve the same goal.”
The goal of the computer game League of Legends is to destroy your opponent’s nexus, or nest. The prize: Thousands of dollars in scholarship money could be up for grabs.
“Not every student wants to play football, basketball, or hockey, so this allows us to broaden that competitive spirit among our students into other areas,” said Nicole Farinella, vice president of enrollment at Robert Morris University.
The Staples Center in Los Angeles recently hosted a major tournament that drew gamers from all over the world. The winning team received a $1 million prize.
“You’re playing in a team environment, and there’s strategy involved,” said Kurt Melcher, athletic director at Robert Morris University. “It takes a lot of practise to be good, and these guys put in a lot of practise.”
Dixon, who also plays volleyball for the school, believes there are more parallels than jocks would like to admit.
“Even if you lose, you can go back and evaluate your game play,” Dixon said. “A lot of the time, you can record matches and review them.” “It’s similar to watching a game film.”
The scholarships pay for half of tuition and half of room and board, totaling up to $19,000 per student. Robert Morris University is the first university in the country to offer such a large number of “e-sports” scholarships.
